TSC announce update on December salaries for teachers

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the disbursement of December 2023 salaries for teachers, providing assurance to those in permanent positions, on contracts, and interns that they will receive their salaries ahead of the Christmas festivities.

It is to be noted that the Commission has initiated the payment of third-party obligations, directing funds to entities such as Knut, Kuppet, and insurance companies.

TSC closed the teachers payroll 0n 20th and banks will debit cash to all bank accounts latest Friday 22nd, Dec, 2023.

Each month, TSC deducts various amounts from teachers’ pay slips, encompassing contributions to SACCO through the check-off system. These deductions cover a range of financial commitments, including insurance premiums, monthly hire purchase installments for owned properties, loans, contributions to teachers’ associations (Knut and Kuppet), House Levy, NHIF, and NSSF. TSC executes these deductions as a prerequisite before transferring salaries to teachers’ accounts.

Third-party deductions occur shortly before salaries are deposited into teachers’ bank and SACCO accounts. Traditionally, teachers receive their December salaries on the 18th of the month. Despite earlier concerns raised by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u about financial challenges faced by the government, the recent development assures teachers that their salaries will be paid without disruption.

CS Ndung’u had previously cited economic difficulties stemming from severe drought and el Nino rains, leading to reallocation of budgets and affecting revenue collection. However, TSC’s current actions indicate that teachers’ salaries remain unaffected by these challenges.

It’s worth noting that TSC is facing pressure to address salary changes for P1 teachers who were promoted and deployed to junior secondary schools. Many of these teachers have not experienced adjustments in their salaries since March, when they commenced teaching in Grade 7. Despite these pressures, the recent confirmation of December salary payments by TSC underscores its commitment to ensuring that teachers receive their dues in a timely manner.
